About Eric

Eric Garland is a producer and editor for VERIFY, TEGNA’s national fact-checking team.

In this role, he writes scripts and edits video to produce daily broadcast packages that air on TEGNA’s 64 local TV stations.

He also oversees the weekly production of “VERIFY This,” VERIFY’s streaming show that recaps the latest misinformation his team fact-checked that week.

In the Spring, he served as lead producer and project manager for a longform series titled, “The Burnout Equation: Inside America’s Teacher Shortage Crisis,” that investigated the teacher shortage crisis in America. The series is currently being submitted for consideration of multiple awards.

Prior to this role, Eric was a video producer for McClatchy, which owns 30 news outlets across the country, including the Miami Herald, the Sacramento Bee and the Kansas City Star.

He shot and edited video, reported on camera and wrote stories to cover a wide range of high-profile issues across McClatchy’s network.

Eric also helped produce McClatchy’s 10-episode documentary series called “The War Within.” The series was recognized by The White House News Photographers Association’s 2019 Eyes of History: Multimedia Contest and earned a Webby Award nomination for “Best Reality Series.”

Before joining McClatchy, Eric was a video producer for The Hill newspaper, where he covered election cycles, the 2016 Republican National Convention and the Trump administration.

Eric started his journalism career as a sports intern for the Baltimore Sun, covering the Baltimore Ravens, Baltimore Orioles, Maryland Terrapins and high school athletics. His work was featured on the front page of the Sun’s sports section, and he produced The Sun’s highest-viewed videos of the day twice with his multimedia stories.

Eric graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park in 2013 with a B.A. in journalism.
